he age of 77. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 17, 1947, Champ was the son of the late Harold and Marian (Atkins) Soncrant.Raised in Dorchester and Dedham, Massachusetts, Champ graduated from Dedham High School in 1965. His athletic prowess, particularly in track and football, earned him recognition and induction into the Dedham High School Hall of Fame. After completing his high school education, Champ pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting at Bentley University.During his university years, Champ worked as a union ironworker, contributing to the construction of Boston’s iconic skyline. However, inspired by his wife Joanne’s encouragement, Champ transitioned to a career in academia. He joined the faculty at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, where he dedicated 41 years of his life to teaching accounting.Champ’s impact on the Champlain College community was profound. He was a popular figure among students, consistently filling lecture halls with eager learners for his 6 a.m. summer school classes. Beyond his teaching duties, Champ actively participated in faculty senate meetings, served as a track and field coach and mentored numerous students.One of Champ’s most remarkable achievements was his involvement in the IRS VITA program. Through this program, he fostered meaningful connections between his classroom and the community by providing tax assistance to low-income citizens. Champ was honored to be named a Faculty Emeritus in 2021.Though he took great pride in his work at Champlain, Champ’s true passions lay outdoors. Champ and Joanne, avid skiers, chose to spend their early retirement years in Crested Butte, Colorado. There, they volunteered on the mountain’s hospitality team and had easy access to their favorite trails. In the summers, they embarked on mountaineering adventures, most notably hiking through Nepal to reach the Mount Everest Base Camp. They also ventured into the French Alps to test their mountaineering skills. However, Champ’s greatest love was golf, and he rarely played a bad round.Champ’s adventurous spirit, infectious laughter, captivating storytelling, and ability to find joy in every moment will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joanne, and their beloved dog, Luke.
