Kentucky gas prices among lowest in U.S. but could rise soon

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Gas prices are expected to climb heading into summer, but Kentucky remains one of the cheapest states in the nation for fuel.
Experts say prices could still exceed $3 per gallon in the coming weeks due to the seasonal switch to a different fuel blend. Lori Wea
ver Hawkins with AAA Bluegrass explained that the transition impacts costs.
“We switch over to a different blend of fuel that does not evaporate as quickly an rapidly.” “So that gets passed along to the consumer at the pump,” said Weaver Hawkins.
To save money, experts recommend signing up for gas station rewards programs, using apps to compare local prices, and understanding the price cycle, which fluctuates every 7 to 12 days.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, highlighted Lexington’s gas price trends.
“Especially in Lexington it’s an area where we see gas prices cycle every week or 2 where they’re slowly inching down and they suddenly jump up 20 to 40 cents a gallon. Kind of getting used to that behavior and kind of feeling out how that works is probably a big way that motorists can save money,” said De Haan.
De Haan predicts that Lexington gas prices may spike soon.
“I do believe that prices will make that cycle sometime this week, so if you’re listening or what not, it may be a good idea to fill your tank now rather than waiting for later in the week when prices may jump up closer to $3 a gallon.”
Despite the potential increase, Kentucky ranks 4th in the nation for lowest gas prices, with a statewide average of $2.72 per gallon, compared to $3.40 in Illinois.
“Illinois gas prices tend to be quite a bit higher, in fact Illinois’ average today, $3.40 where the Kentucky state wide average just $2.72” said De Haan.
Gas prices in Lexington are also 62 cents lower per gallon than this time last year, but experts warn that ongoing tariffs could impact future costs at the pump.
