Kehl is said to have registered to vote and then eventually voted on election day, November 8, 2022, while actively serving a Felony OWI Probation sentence that made him ineligible to vote.
Authorities say election officials have a list of felons within their clerk's jurisdiction created by the Department of Corrections with them at polling locations to compare with absentee ballots and election day activities with any violations being reported to the District Attorney's Office.
The charge is serious and goes against the core of what our country is based on.
Judge Lavey
While the state reportedly recommended 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine, Jusge Lavey handed down a sentence to Kehl of 7 days in jail and a $1,500 fine.
Wisconsin law provides safeguards to deter those serving a felony sentence from voting in elections and provides a process for accountability if that law is violated. I hope this sentence serves as a deterrent to those serving a felony sentence, including probation, by showing there are consequences if they violate the integrity of electoral process.
