Coroner identifies inmate who died after medical emergency at Georgetown Co. jail

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A woman who died after being found unresponsive at the Georgetown County Detention Center was identified Monday morning.
Brandy Carla Matthews, 39, of Georgetown died at Tidelands Georgetown Hospital on Saturday afternoon, according to Georgetown County Coroner
Chase Ridgeway.
Officials with the sheriff’s office said Matthews was placed in the detention center’s detox unit after police arrested her Friday for shoplifting.
Staff at the jail noticed the inmate was experiencing a medical emergency and attempted to provide care before EMS arrived. She was then taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is scheduled Wednesday to determine the cause and manner of death.
Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate the death. ...read more read less
