BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Remember those card packs you bought when you were a kid? Hopefully you kept some of them. Today, you could score a buck. "This is a pretty expensive card," said Juan Vasquez while holding a certified Jayden Daniels "mirror red" card. "It's a PSA 10, it's worth maybe about $1,500 right now. It's one of my prized possessions at the shop." Vasquez has been collecting cards ever since he was a kid. It isn’t just cards: The items sports collectors are seeking out "I first started putting cards on my bike on the rims, just to hear that noise. That's how I first started collecting," said Vasquez, who sells sports cards. "After that, I started buying more cards. It's something that I love to do, and just a few years ago I was able to open up a shop." Now, Vasquez says he opens up to 40 boxes a day, equaling hundreds of cards he uses to stock his store, and also going to shows like the Bakersfield Card Expo at Dignity Health Convention Center. "We started in November to see if there was a turnout for Bakersfield," said Chris Fleming, a promoter for the event. "It went really well, so we decided to do one in the spring too." And it's not just sports cards you can score a payday with. That Pokémon card you thought was cool? It can evolve into a hefty sum too. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. That binder you've hidden in your garage? Time to bring it down and whip out a calculator. Who knows? A small fortune may be in the cards for you. "It's about providing a positive space for the kids to come out and enjoy," said Dickson. "There's no drama here, there's no anything, it's where they can come and actually enjoy collecting and being part of the hobby." "It's all about the hobby, it's all about the community and the people," said Vasquez. "I just want to see people smile." ...read more read less
