NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — Extreme weather swings are creating the perfect storm for increased pest activity in the spring and summer.
The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) wants to help homeowners and businesses be informed.
They released its bi-annual Bug Barometer, which is a data-
driven look at what to expect from pest populations.
The expert entomologists at NPMA are predicting rising encounters with pests such as ticks, cockroaches, and ants.

"Spring and summer are already peak pest seasons, so we know the bugs are coming," said the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at NPMA, Dr. Jim Fredericks. "But this year's irregular weather patterns are accelerating pest activity, leading to earlier and more frequent encounters. Our Bug Barometer is a valuable tool to help people understand the type of pest activity to expect in their area so they can take steps early to protect their homes, families, and ultimately their health."
In the North Central area, which includes North Dakota, the dry conditions may delay pest activity. But once rain starts to roll in, the ants and cockroaches will be out in full force. Spring is predicted to arrive early, so ticks will be showing up sooner than scheduled.
"Several of these pests aren't just a nuisance — they can spread disease or even cause costly damage to homes and buildings, making proactive pest control even more important," added Fredericks.
If you think you have a pest infestation, you should contact a licensed pest control professional.
