AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas head men's basketball coach Rodney Terry was fired Sunday after the Longhorns lost to Xavier in the First Four of the men's NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
Terry completed his second full season as the program's head coach with a 19-16 record,
6-12 in Southeastern Conference play, and a first-round exit in the SEC tournament.

Rumors had been swirling about Terry's job status amid the team's struggles to hold leads and injury issues that kept their best players on the sidelines. A game before the SEC tournament, guard Chendall Weaver returned to the lineup and the Longhorns won two games, beating Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. That was enough for the NCAA Tournament selection committee to make the Longhorns one of the last teams in the tournament and in the First Four.
When asked about his potential firing after the loss Wednesday, he said the rumor mill is of no concern to him because of his faith.
"A the end of the day, it's in God's hands," he said. "That's how I live my life. I'm a believer. If God has plans for me to be here, then I'll be here. If he plans for me to be somwhere else, he's the one with the master plan at all times. I don't live my life by a man, I live it by God. I've got strong faith."

Terry signed a 5-year contract worth $15.3 million in March 2023. During the announcement ceremony with university administrators, along with current and former players, athletic director Chris Del Conte said he knew he was going to make Terry the permanent head coach, he just had to "go out and earn it."
The current buyout in his contract is around $5.3 million.
Terry took over as interim head coach in 2022 after Chris Beard was suspended and eventually fired following a domestic violence charge. The Travis County district attorney's office dropped the charge and Ole Miss hired Beard shortly after that. Beard brought Terry to Texas as an associate head coach in the 2021-22 season.

Terry went 22-8 as interim head coach and guided the team to the Elite Eight, finishing the season with a 29-9 record. The effort earned Terry the 2023 Sporting News national coach of the year award, making him the first Texas coach to win it. After that, however, the Longhorns' season records got worse.
Texas went 21-13 in Terry's first full season as the head coach last year, losing in the second round of the NCAA tournament to Tennessee and his former boss, Rick Barnes. Terry was an assistant coach at Texas for Barnes from 2002-2011 before getting his first head coaching job at Fresno State starting in 2011.
After finishing 9-9 in their last year in the Big 12 Conference, Texas joined the SEC and was part of 14 teams from the conference to make the tournament, the most ever for a single conference.
