Agape: therapeutic riding
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each week on Community Link, Carolene Mays takes a look at an organization or business that is making a positive impact on the community.
This week, Mays was joined by Stephanie Amick, founder of Agape Therapeutic Riding, which offers equin
e therapy to individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges.
“The mission of Agape is to cultivate personal growth by strengthening the mind, body, and spirit for individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges,” Executive Director of Agape Therapeutic Riding Stephanie Amick said.
Agape Therapeutic Riding provides therapeutic riding for individuals aged four and up, group sessions for various community groups, and off-site programs using miniature horses.
The therapeutic riding sessions are held in small, relational settings where participants learn horsemanship skills in classes of up to four individuals once a week. Group sessions cater to school groups, addiction recovery groups, and women who have experienced trauma or grief, focusing on learning skills such as setting boundaries, assertiveness, communication, and teamwork.
Agape’s miniature horses are used in off-site programs at senior living and memory care facilities, providing therapeutic benefits to senior citizens.
The organization is actively seeking volunteers, particularly for Saturday classes, to support their programs.
