Ian Glavinovich goal helps Union blank St. Louis City
Mar 22, 2025
CHESTER — Six days ago, the Union allowed Nashville to come into Subaru Park and dictate terms on their home park. Saturday night, the Union didn’t replicate that mistake.
Ian Glavinovich scored in the eighth minute, and the Union took the sting out of visiting St. Louis City SC even before Edua
rd Lowen’s red card in the 66th of a 1-0 win.
With the Union down eight players to international duty, it was a very credible home result against a team, even without 2023 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Roman Burki, that hadn’t allowed a goal in four matches to start the season.
Glavinovich, in his first start, headed home of a stellar piece of service from Kai Wagner off a corner kick, the Argentine’s first goal for the Union and first league goal of his career.
The Union were forced into their first lineup changes of the year. Despite showing a 5-3-2, the Union actually stuck with the same formation, albeit with Nathan Harriel cast drastically out of position as a No. 10, essential a front line of defense. Indiana Vassilev started in midfield, Olivier Mbaizo returned to play at right back and Bruno Damiani got his first start up top. Glavinovich started for the suspended Olwethu Makhanya.
The bench was extremely short on experience – four players with zero MLS appearances and six with four or fewer for a combined 79 appearances between the nine warm bodies. Alejandro Bedoya missed out, though the team didn’t provide a reason.
Andrew Rick, in goal, had to make just one save. It came in the 34th, a diving save well off his line on Cedric Teuchert’s shot.
The Union created plenty, especially through Quinn Sullivan down the left, but had only the set-piece goal to show for the first half. Damiani got a look in the 39th on a drag back from Sullivan that was slightly behind the Uruguayan striker, Lundt making a comfortable save. He likewise got behind the ball in the 44th when Sullivan cut inside to lash one on goal.
The Union didn’t have as many chances in the second half. Ben Lundt was strong in goal with eight saves, but the game mostly deadened after Lowen was sent off. ...read more read less
