Accused shoplifters ram deputy's car, other vehicles: SCSO

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- Two men who were suspected of shoplifting are accused of hitting a deputy's vehicle as well as several other vehicles in southeast Memphis.
Kenneth Taper, 59, and Mario Pirtle, 47, were taken into custody on Saturday evening.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office
, deputies were flagged down about a shoplifting at the Burlington Coat Factory on Winchester Road. An employee reportedly told deputies that a suspect had just stolen merchandise and was trying to flee the scene.
SCSO says that when deputies tried to stop the suspect, he ran into a waiting vehicle. The vehicle allegedly rammed a deputy's patrol vehicle as well as two other vehicles in the parking lot.
SCSO says the vehicle then sped off the parking lot and hit another vehicle on Centennial Drive and Winchester Road.

According to SCSO, the suspects led deputies on a brief chase on Highway 385. SCSO says the suspects' vehicle stopped on the off-ramp of Kirby Parkway because of damage it had taken during the crashes.
The suspects were taken into custody and were later identified as Taper and Pirtle. SCSO says deputies recovered $872 in stolen merchandise and returned it to Burlington Coat Factory.
Taper has been charged with shoplifting, driving with a license that is suspended/revoked/canceled, evading arrest, duty upon striking an unattended vehicle, reckless driving, and violating financial responsibility law.
