Weather Forecast: The cold is here to stay through the weekend
Mar 22, 2025
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Although the latter part of last week teased us with a taste of spring, Mother Nature has decided to remind Western New York that winter isn’t quite ready to let go. Scattered snow showers are expected to continue intermittently throughout the afternoon, gradually taperi
ng off by the evening. Along with the snow, temperatures will also keep dropping, making for a chilly finish to the day. As the clouds hang around, my main question is whether they’ll clear out in time for us to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights tonight. With G3 geomagnetic storm conditions in play, there’s potential for a spectacular display—so, if you plan to head outdoors, make sure to bundle up! Temperatures will be in the 20s by the time the lights are visible.
AURORAS TONIGHT: NOAA is predicting Strong G3 conditions will be possible later tonight (Saturday night) in response to the arrival of a "Sun burp". At G3. auroras can spill across even middle latitudes of the United States. pic.twitter.com/2Wh6xeRcmI— Eric Snitil (@EricSnitilWx) March 22, 2025
The clouds should start to break up overnight, and tomorrow looks to be a much brighter, albeit brutally cold, day. While we’ll see plenty of sunshine, temperatures will struggle to rise, likely staying in the 20s for much of the morning. A southerly flow will begin to bring some warmer air in the evening as our next system approaches, allowing temperatures to climb slightly overnight into the 30s.
That system will move in early Monday morning, bringing a mix of snow and rain as warmer air starts to filter in. Once that initial batch passes, we’ll experience a dry slot through much of the morning and early afternoon, allowing temperatures to rise into the upper 40s. However, this won’t last long. A cold front will sweep through later in the day, bringing scattered rain showers as temperatures drop back into the 30s by evening and overnight.
As we move into Tuesday and Wednesday, we can expect an unsettled pattern with occasional snow showers, though the chances for significant accumulation remain low. The forecast models are currently in disagreement on the specifics, so we’ll keep an eye on things. Temperatures for these days should remain in the upper 30s, with a chilly breeze making it feel even colder at times.
Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, we can expect drier conditions, with temperatures gradually rising back into the mid-40s, though still below seasonal averages for this time of year.
The forecast for next weekend is certainly one to watch. A storm system looks to move into the Rochester region by Saturday morning, and while it’s still too early to determine exact details, early indications suggest a mix of rain and snow may be on the way. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and provide updates both online and during our shows as new information becomes available. ...read more read less
