TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE)- A wanted shooting suspect is now in custody after carjacking a vehicle, shooting at deputies, and causing a subsequent SWAT callout, the Tulare County Sheriff's Office says.
Around 3 p.m. Friday, deputies reported seeing 30-year-old Robert Anthony Zamora drive b
y at a high rate of speed. He was already wanted by the sheriff's office as he was believed to be a suspect in a shooting in Alpaugh earlier that morning, they say.
After failing to pull him over, deputies discovered he was involved in a collision and was stranded on the side of the road near a construction site.
When deputies arrived at the construction site, they say they learned Zamora had carjacked a truck outside of Alpaugh around Highway 43 and Avenue 56, and left the area.
As they continued to try to locate Zamora, they say they found him on Highway 43 but he, again, failed to stop. Instead, deputies say, he led them on a pursuit into Allensworth where he abandoned the truck and ran.
While chasing him, deputies say he fired a gun at them and then fired at a civilian. No one was injured.
Investigators say he went on to barricade himself into a nearby mobile home. That's when the SWAT team was called out to search the home - where they found Zamora hiding underneath it.
Zamora was taken into custody and booked into the South County Detention Facility early Saturday morning on suspicion of several felony charges. ...read more read less
