Kelvin Yeboah scores twice, but Loons settle for 22 draw with L.A. Galaxy
Mar 22, 2025
Minnesota United got a sliver of payback on the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday at Allianz Field.
The Loons’ 2-2 draw with the defending MLS Cup champions comes with some consolation after Galaxy’s 6-2 blowout of MNUFC in the Western Conference semifinal last November.
Striker Kelvin Yeboah score
d both goals on Saturday, including a go-ahead penalty kick in the 87th minute, but United (2-1-2, 8 points) couldn’t hold a second-half lead for a second straight week. After giving up a three-goal lead in a 3-3 draw at Kansas City last Saturday, the Loons were equalized on Emiro Garces’s 90th minute goal on a recycled set piece and L.A. (0-3-2, 2 points) escaped with a point.
“We had some bitterness from the last game,” Yeboah said. “We were hoping to really get a win. It builds up and gives us a lot of confidence and boost. We know now that we can go head-to-head with, let’s say, the giants of MLS.”
Here are three takeaways:
Half full?
Five MNUFC starters were gone with their national teams this weekend, but head coach Eric Ramsay isn’t being as forgiving of dropped points amid absences in international windows this season. He made that point with reporters on Friday.
“I will, for sure, wake up frustrated with the result,” Ramsay said postgame on Saturday. “But if you were to ask me before (the match) I would have, to an extent, preferred a performance that shows what we can be at home.”
The Loons held a 9-4 advantage in shots on target but still gave up two one-goal leads — two stats to serve as instances of the being glass half full or half empty.
Ramsay felt the second goal conceded was a byproduct of unfamiliarity along the back line, with Nicholas Romero, Morris Duggan and Jefferson Diaz playing together for the first time.
“I put a little bit of that down to concentration, mentality and is a really disappointing goal to concede and we got to get better there,” he said. “But, again there are some mitigating circumstances. But I’m keen to not put those excuses on the plate in front of the players because I feel like they are better than that. We should have closed that game out for sure.”
Superman scores
Former Loons forward Christian Ramirez scored on a short-range header in the 26th minute, but “Superman” declined to celebrate in front of members in The Wonderwall supporters groups in the south stand.
“I had spoken to several people about if I were scored and if I would celebrate,” Ramirez said. “I’ve celebrated against Minnesota at my home during that time, in Houston and then Columbus, but here I can’t do that, especially in front of the wall. I caught myself in the moment as everyone does when a goal happens. Just thankful I was able to (score).”
Yeboah’s brace
Yeboah’s first goal was the byproduct of responding to coaches insisting he loiter at times at the back post. He was there to pounce on John McCarthy’s inability to grab a shot from left wingback Anthony Markanich in the 19th minute.
Yeboah’s second goal was a deviation from his previous PK strategy to hesitate before striking the ball. On Saturday, he ran up to the ball and immediately slotted it into the bottom right corner.
“I have to give them something to think about,” said Yeboah, who now leads the team with four goals this season.
Three tidbits
MNUFC signed forward Darius Randell and goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich to short-term loans for Saturday’s game. The MNUFC2 players, both 17 years old, didn’t play Saturday and will have three more chances to be called up this season. … The Loons won’t play Galaxy again until Decision Day, the regular-season finale, on Oct. 18. … Minnesota is unbeaten in four matches, but momentum wanes in giving up leads in consecutive draws.
