INDIANAPOLIS — Shots were fired at funeral procession bound for Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis on Saturday.
Cornelius Kimbrough, one of the procession's escorts, told FOX59 and CBS4 a red or burgundy SUV approached the procession as it reached the intersection of 30th Street and Capitol Av
enue. Kimbrough said multiple individuals in ski masks fired shots at the procession from the SUV.
The shooters appeared to be targeting one specific car in the procession — a red Acura. Witnesses at the scene told FOX59 and CBS4 the red Acura's occupant is related to the decedent the funeral was being held for.
The Acura and another law enforcement vehicle involved in the procession were damaged by the gunfire.
Public police reporting systems indicate Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to the area around 2:35 p.m. to investigate a report of shots fired. Witnesses told FOX59 and CBS4 nobody was injured during the shooting.
A public police report on the shooting has not been made available yet. A FOX59/CBS4 crew at the scene saw IMPD officers taking photos and setting down evidence markers.
Kimbrough told FOX59 and CBS4 that the SUV the shots were fired from fled southbound after the shooting. He added that the cars involved in the procession all came to a halt when shots were fired. Drivers of the stopped cars then began to provide descriptions of what the suspect vehicle looked like.
"It's supposed to be a family remembering their loved one, taking them to their final resting place," Kimbrough said.
"It happened so fast. And I felt whatever it is come through the window of my car. Like the ricochet or whatever. I felt something flying, but thank God I missed the bullets."
