Purdue beats McNeese to advance to Sweet 16 in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS - No. 4 seed Purdue let No. 12 seed McNeese know from the opening tip-off there wouldn't be a second upset as the Boilermakers beat the Cowboys 76-62 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Midwest Region in Providence.
The Boilers will now play in the Sweet 16 about an hour from
their campus at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. They'll face the winner of Houston-Gonzaga on Friday night.
The Cowboys took an early 3-2 lead before Purdue took control. Junior guard Fletcher Loyer hit the first of six Boilers' three-pointers in the first half to give them the lead for good.
Purdue dominated the rest of the half, taking a 20-point lead on two free throws from All-American guard Braden Smith with four minutes left in the first. The Boilers led 38-20 at halftime.
McNeese could only get as close at 16 in the second half as Purdue extended the lead to as many as 26 with just over five minutes to play.
Junior forward Trey Kaufman-Renn led the Boilers with 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Loyer added 15 points and freshman guard C.J. Cox had 11 points. Smith finished with 10 points and five assists.
Purdue shot 42.3% (11-of-26) from three-point range and outrebounded the Cowboys, 41-24.
McNeese advanced to the second round after stunning No. 5 seed Clemson 69-67 in the first round of Thursday afternoon.
The Sweet 16 appearance is the program's sixth in the last eight tournaments and 15th overall. ...read more read less
