GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) -- The National Transportation Safety Board released a report explaining what happened during a May 5, 2023 plane crash near Greenville. Experts said the landing resulted in substantial damage to the plane and serious injuries to both people in it. Post-accident exami nations of the engine found large amounts of metallic flakes and debris in the oil filter and oil pump screen. When the engine was taken apart, wear was seen on the camshaft lobes, lifters and the No. 2 piston pin plug. The engine was last overhauled about 21 years before the crash and experts said it was nine years past recommended overhaul time. The NTSB determined the probable cause of the crash to be inadequate maintenance by the operator and maintenance personnel which resulted in loss of engine power due to oil starvation. ...read more read less
