BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- When a car crashed along a busy road in Cheektowaga, most drivers and bystanders kept moving. But one woman from Buffalo knew she had to stop -- and it likely saved a man's life.
Last Friday started off as a typical afternoon for Buffalo resident Sarah Brown.
"I was co
ming home from work," said Brown. "I was on my way to get my daughter from daycare. I was just taking my regular route home."
Her normal drive takes her past the intersection of East Delavan Avenue and Pine Ridge Heritage Boulevard in Cheektowaga. But this time, the road was completely backed up. Brown soon found out why.
"It looked like an action movie scene," said Brown. "It was unreal. I was flabbergasted."
According to Cheektowaga Police, around 4 p.m. last Friday, a 60-year-old man had a medical emergency that caused him to crash the vehicle he was driving. After flipping his car completely on its side, the man was unresponsive.
Brown told WIVB News 4 she saw the man lying on the ground. People were then screaming, asking if anybody knew how to perform CPR.
A few years ago, Brown, who works for the Buffalo Board of Education, got CPR certified while attending a training in Saratoga. Just this past summer, she recertified at the Erie County Fair.
"Something in the back of my mind told me to refresh," said Brown. "Later down the road, here I was."
Brown found herself in the right place at the right time. After hearing those calls for help, she immediately exited her car and began life-saving measures on the man.
"I was praying over him, pleading to Jesus," Brown said. "I just wanted to see him breathe again. I didn't know him, but I wanted him to at least get home to his family."
After a few minutes of chest compressions, the man began to breathe again. In that moment, Brown knew she saved his life.
"I thank God for putting me in that position to be of help and to be of service because no one else was doing it," said Brown. "I really feel like God ordained me to be in the right place at the right time."
After police and paramedics arrived, the man was taken to the hospital where he is now in stable condition.
Brown is using her experience to ask everyone to get CPR certified.
"You never know when you might need it, not just for a loved one but for everyone around you," Brown said. "We need to have more compassion for each other and the people around us."
Since the accident, Cheektowaga police have reached out to Brown telling her the family of the man wants to thank her. She said she would love to meet him and learn more about the life she saved.
"I would love to talk to him," said Brown. "I thank God he's here. I'm just so happy."
