FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Security cameras at Hawley Square caught a family abandoning a small dog behind a shopping center near Raeford Road in Fayetteville.
The video shows a red crossover vehicle with a man driving, a woman as a passenger, and a child in the backseat. The dog is running ar
ound the passenger side, while the man sits a dog kennel next to a dumpster. He then places the kennel back inside the trunk.

The vehicle takes off as the dog tries to chase down the car. The driver grins while leaving.
The dog eventually ran up to a man coming out of one of the businesses in the strip mall, who asked to not be identified.

"My first thought wasn't somebody dumped him," the man said. "[I thought] he just got lost from home."
After seeing the video, the man said he became angry.
"Just knowing that somebody is capable of doing that to such an animal," he said.
The man took the dog to the vet to get his microchip scanned. He learned the dog's name is Benny and the chip expired in 2021. The dog is owned by a husband and wife, one of whom has been in jail.
"The dude has been in jail for about a year," the man said. "The wife has been in custody of [the dog]."
The people caught on camera abandoning Benny have not been identified as of Friday. Cumberland County Animal Services said if they are caught, they could face criminal charges for animal abuse.
The man hasn't decided if he will add Benny to his fur family or give him up for adoption.
"I'm weary I just picked [Benny] up," he said. "He just got dumped and now he's going to feel I dumped him again."
If the man decides to give the dog up for adoption, he said he will give Benny to the Fayetteville Animal Protection Society to ensure potential owners can be vetted. ...read more read less
