Last week, the Lake County commissioners and officials from the Lake County Farm Bureau highlighted the regional importance and prevalence of agriculture following National Ag Day (March 18) by declaring March 16-22 as National Ag Week in Lake County.
According to the board’s unanimous special res
olution, “Agriculture is at the heart of our daily lives, shaping the world in ways we often take for granted. From the food on our tables to the clothes we wear, the fuel that powers our communities, and the materials that build our homes, agriculture touches every aspect of our lives.”
Bureau Organization Director Mandy Orahood noted that the board’s March 20 proclamation additionally serves as a staunch unifier.
“This National Agriculture Week, we celebrate the farmers — of all sizes and practices — who work tirelessly to feed, fuel, and clothe the world,” she said. “As our population grows, we are losing farmland, and our farmers face the challenge of producing more with less, all while caring for the land, animals, and communities they love.
“Today, and every day, we honor their dedication, innovation, and resilience, and the future they’re cultivating for all of us.”
Additionally, the National Agriculture Day program encourages every American to “understand how abundant and affordable food and fiber products are produced,” and to explore career opportunities in the industry.
“This week, we honor American agriculture and the farm and ranch families who are devoted to providing a safe and sustainable food supply, and I am pleased to support the adoption of this resolution,” said Commissioner Richard Regovich.
Commissioner John Plecnik described agriculture as “the foundation of our daily lives,” adding that the industry continues to stand as a thriving economic force in Lake County communities.
“No farmers, no food,” he stated. “As we observe National Agriculture Week, let us take a moment to acknowledge the hard work of our farmers, who fill our plates and help build our homes.”
Commissioner Morris Beverage III noted that with fewer than 2 percent of Americans directly linked to agriculture, the “vital contributions” of farming families can easily be overlooked.
“Today, each farmer feeds more than 169 people, reflecting their ingenuity and commitment,” he emphasized. “This National Agriculture Week, let us take a moment to recognize and appreciate the essential role they play in supporting our nation’s health and prosperity.” ...read more read less
