Sister of 1998 murder victim speaks about case
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The sister of a 1998 murder victim said Friday she believes Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has given up on his case, after investigators sent the wrong man to prison.
Kolleen Bunch is suing the Indianapolis ci
ty government along with Leon Benson, the man wrongfully accused of killing her brother, Kasey Schoen.
I-Team 8 on Thursday aired an interview with Benson.
Benson spent more than 20 years in prison until an investigation by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office’s conviction integrity unit led to his exoneration in 2023.
Bunch said police have not reached out to her and allowed the case to go cold. “Their actual answer to me was, for whatever reason the prosecutor let the actual murderer go. And that’s how they left it with me.”
IMPD declined to comment on the lawsuit or the case when I-Team 8 reached out.
Bunch also said some of her family still believes Benson killed her brother.
