Terminated employee is arrested accused of bringing what appeared to be a gun to get last paycheck

Newberry Co., SC (WOLO) — A Prosperity man is behind bars after officials say he brought what appeared to be a handgun into a business while others were inside during his attempt to pick up his last paycheck. According to deputies, the incident took place Frida
y morning at the Martin’s Landing which was formerly Holland’s Landing along Marina Way.
Deputies received a 9-1-1 call asking them to respond to a restaurant where they had reports of a man with a gun. Once authorities arrived they say they located a man at the bar of the restaurant. That man was later determined to be 40 year old Duan Patrick Barnes who deputies say was a former employee who had been terminated.
Officials say Barnes came into the business to get his last paycheck from his previous employer. Deputies say further investigation determined that Barnes was carrying a “very real looking” BB gun along with a police type holster and was being very aggressive. According to deputies, He was taken into custody and taken to the Newberry County Detention Center where he is facing Assault and Battery 1st degree, and Kidnapping charges.

Sheriff Lee Foster released a brief statement surrounding the incident saying,
“He is grateful no one was hurt in this incident because the pistol looked very real and the suspect was aggressive. Sheriff Foster continued saying, this is absolutely no way to settle a dispute over money. We have courts and regulatory agencies for that.”
No bond has been set at this time.
