Man charged in Atwater sickle stabbing makes first court appearance

ATWATER, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The man accused of attacking four people in Atwater made his first court appearance on Friday.

der after police say he stabbed three people and attacked a fourth before stealing a car and leading police on a brief chase.
Merced County District Attorney Nicole Silveira says her office will be seeking the maximum punishment for the multiple charges he is facing.
"We are filing charges against him for three counts of attempted murder on five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of criminal threats and one count of felony evading of a police officer," Silveira said.

Three people were stabbed during the incident on Friday. District Attorney Silveira said the fourth person in the attack was not stabbed - but was attacked.
"The evidence shows that he was hit with some blunt force trauma and then another victim was threatened as well as had a knife swung at him," Silveira said.
If convicted on all his charges, Chavez Gonzalez could be sentenced to 24 years in prison
"Multiple people were injured. And we are going to do everything in our power to hold him accountable. We will not tolerate this form of extreme violence in our community," Silveira said.
Silveira said Chavez Gonzalez had been recently been released from prison and a motive for his attack on the four unsuspecting victims is still not known at this time. The victims remain in the hospital. ...read more read less
