Salem man charged with dealing fentanyl after police search in NE Salem
Mar 21, 2025
A shooting investigation last month in northeast Salem turned up two guns and 188,000 lethal doses worth of fentanyl , according to a Salem police affidavit.
The Marion County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday charged Gerardo Parra-Valdez, 35, with delivery of fentanyl, possessing a firea
rm as a felon and unlawful possession of a short-barrelled rifle.
Police also suspected that Parra-Valdez fired gunshots in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 1589 Market St. N.E. on the same morning that they found the drugs and guns, a detective wrote in the affidavit. Parra-Valdez had not been charged with the shooting as of Friday afternoon.
The Salem Police Department affidavit provided an account of the events that led up to Parra-Valdez’ arrest.
Police responded on Feb. 20 to a report of a shooting around 5:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the apartment complex. A witness reported hearing eight to 10 gunshots, a vehicle speeding away and then “a second volley of gunfire,” according to the affidavit.
Officers called out to residents of an apartment near where they believed the shooting happened, the affidavit said. Just before 10 a.m., Parra-Valdez and another man exited the apartment.
Police heard furniture being moved inside the apartment and believed the men, who had a history of drug trafficking, were hiding something.
A search of the apartment and a car outside turned up a short-barreled rifle and a stolen handgun which police said were in Parra-Valdez’ possession.
Police also found about 376 grams of powdered fentanyl. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration describes about 2 milligrams of fentanyl as containing a lethal dose, according to the affidavit.
Police also found spent casings and five loaded magazines, including one high-capacity drum-style magazine.
Parra-Valdez was not arrested until nearly a month later, when he was accused of attempting to elude police on March 14. He faces two counts of that charge in a case unrelated to the drug and gun charges, according to court records.
He was booked into the Marion County Jail where he remained as of Friday afternoon, the jail’s roster showed.
Parra-Valdez previously pleaded guilty in August 2022 to conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine in Marion County and was sentenced to a year in state prison.
