Warm weather sparks garden planning as spring arrives
Mar 21, 2025
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Now that it is officially spring and temperatures have been getting warmer you might want to start doing some planting.
If you are looking to do some planting, you'll want to be prepared to protect those plants if temperatures drop below freezing.
At Sixteen Acres G
arden Center in Springfield, there are some flowers now available. And if you're thinking about putting flowers in your garden right now, there are some that do better in colder temperatures than others.
Store Manager Nalini Benoit told 22News, "Pansies are great, they can handle some pretty cold weather. They say it could go down to 20 but the buds are probably lower than 25, or 30. If you do put it out it just takes throwing something breathable over it if we are to get a frost."
Again if you are doing any planting, be ready to cover up or bring your flowers inside if it's going to get down below freezing. And now that the ground has thawed out you can start planting shrubs and trees as well. And it does look like we have some colder temperatures on the way as we head into the weekend so you may want to hold off a little longer before putting those plants in your garden.
