Wasatch County Council appointed the third member of the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Merit Commission Wednesday. Joe Dunbeck, who has previously served on the commission, will occupy the third seat. The county council appoints members of the merit commission. Leo Lucey, Greg McPhie and Joe Dunbeck hav
e all served on the commission since it was established in 2019. Terms on the merit commission last six years, and Dunbeck’s seat will expire in 2031. The commission is responsible for adopting policies and procedures to evaluate candidates for law enforcement jobs in the Sheriff’s Office. They also establish criteria for Sheriff’s Office employment policies and create a hearing process for employees. Jon Woodard, the Wasatch County attorney, said that the commission must include members who are not all of the same political party. Jon Woodard, the attorney for Wasatch County, said that the merit commission members are responsible for fielding applications for deputy jobs in the Sheriff’s Office that they can then pass along to the sheriff. “They designate the pool of three that are most qualified for that position from the overall pool that they had,” Woodard said. While Dunbeck is a registered Democrat, Lucey and McPhie are both registered Republicans. All three members are Wasatch County residents. Dustin Grabau, the Wasatch County manager, said that there are currently vacancies in the Sheriff’s Office that the merit commission would be able to help fill. County councilors said that, in the future, they might call the merit commission to provide an update for the council. “Just for checks and balances. I think it’s good to have a place you need to report, you know, once in a while on the things that are going on and how your committee is functioning,” Councilor Colleen Bonner said. “We can extend that invitation.” Grabau said that, going forward, having more consistent meetings with the commission would ensure that all of the “proper procedures” are being followed when it comes to employment in the Sheriff’s Office. The post Former Wasatch County Sheriff’s Merit Commission member reinstated appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
