Federal workers, supporters rally at Virginia State Capitol against mass layoffs

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Dozens of federal workers, union representatives and allies gathered at the Bell Tower in Richmond’s Capitol Square to protest recent mass layoffs Friday afternoon.
“It seems like we are being attacked on our own land by our own people,” said Samantha Reed, president o
f AFGE Local 1178. “People want to serve. People are passionate about this country.”
Protestors called attention to job losses following Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) budget cuts, which have impacted thousands of workers nationwide, including those here in Virginia.
“It came as a shock to be laid off after nine months, especially after getting a performance award,” Hyde said. “So, when I got the email that said you’re terminated because of a reduction in force and performance, I was like, 'No, that can't be right.'”
Among federal officials responsible for the layoffs, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins claimed the decisions were tough but necessary.
“It's extraordinarily difficult for me, especially as a VA leader and your secretary, to make these types of decisions,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins. “But the federal government does not exist to employ people. It exists to serve people.”
Virginia Congressman Rob Wittman echoed that sentiment in the following statement:
“I understand the confusion and frustration that many Virginians are experiencing as a result of the rapid pace of executive actions coming out of the White House. While enhancing government efficiency is important, I believe these goals should be pursued with compassion. My team and I are here to support the residents of Virginia’s First District during this challenging time. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office — we will continue to share constituent concerns to the administration."
“To not staff the very fiber of the military hospitals to support the veterans, it was just—a slap in the face. It is a total disrespect.” Reed said.
Organizers of the protest are urging concerned citizens to contact state, local and federal representatives to advocate for federal workers and prevent further job cuts. ...read more read less
