NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — In Virginia, health statistics show more than 20,000 people depend on dialysis and just a few thousand fewer have had kidney transplants.
Chronic kidney disease impacts countless people, especially in the Black community, and that's why the Norfolk chapter of the Links In
corporated is planning a free Wellness Expo to target the disease.
It'll take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5 at Lambert's Point Recreation Center, where there will be complimentary health screenings, wellness activities, a gift card giveaway and much more.
The organization's president, Pamela Walker, said there will be someone there to answer any questions people may have.
"We might not be able to 100% stop something, but we can slow it down and we can help people to know, this is how you can do it," Walker said. "Talk to your physician, talk to educators around exercising, all of the things that are available we will have at our event, so they can see how to prevent this chronic disease that's happening."
The event was made possible in collaboration with the city of Norfolk and funding from a $7,500 bond from Baxter Healthcare Corporation’s Renal Business. If you wish to attend, there's no need to sign up in advance. Their goal is to serve at least 300 people. ...read more read less
