Is there a best burger in Honolulu? KHON2 takes the challenge: Hawaiʻi eats
Mar 21, 2025
HONOLULU (KHON2) -- In a blind taste test of some of Honolulu’s best burgers, KHON2’s Mitch Riberal and Emily Cervantes put four local spots to the ultimate challenge.
The results? Well, let's just say there was no clear winner, only strong opinions and passionate preferences.

lected burgers from Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, Carl’s OG Burger Shop, Honolulu Burger Co. and Mahaloha Burgers. Riberal and Cervantes were not told which burger’s which, a big part of all the fun.
The first burger on the table came from Teddy’s Bigger Burgers, and both Riberal and Cervantes immediately noticed the juicy flavor.
“The flavor is very good. It’s juicy, not overcooked. The bun tastes good as well,” Riberal said.
Cervantes agreed, adding, “The bun is really good. But I’m not a big fan of the patty. The bun makes up for it, though. I’m a big bread person.”
Next came Carl’s OG Burger Shop.
Cervantes thought the toppings on this burger were a standout. “This one has a lot of toppings. There’s cheese, sauce, everything piled on,” she noted. “I really like the sauce. It’s strong, and I think the toppings ratio is better here.”
Riberal wasn’t quite as enthusiastic. “I’m still sticking with number one,” he said as he noted that, overall, he was still partial to Teddy’s, or number one for him.
The third burger, from Honolulu Burger Co., got a mixed reaction.

“I think it’s a very classic burger,” Cervantes said. “The sauce is similar to number two, but I like number two a little more. Number one is probably at the bottom of the list because of the sauce.”
Riberal wasn’t a fan of the bread. “I like the bread on one and two more than on three,” he said.
The final burger, from Mahaloha Burgers, surprised them both.
“This burger has a big patty with melted cheese,” Riberal said, impressed. “I actually like this one. It’s pretty good.”
Cervantes saw it differently but still appreciated it. “I think it’s more of a smash burger type, fewer toppings; but it’s really good. And even though I’m not a fan of pickles, I liked them on this burger,” she said.
So, what were the final rankings?
Riberal’s top picks were a tie between Teddy’s and Mahaloha, with Carl’s OG Burger Shop and Honolulu Burger Co. coming in second and third, respectively. “I’d have them all again,” Riberal said.
But Cervantes had a different order. “I think my favorite was Honolulu Burger Co.; then Carl’s; Mahaloha; and then, Teddy’s,” she shared.
Interestingly, the two didn’t even agree on which burger came from which spot.
“I feel like number one is Teddy’s,” Cervantes said confidently.
Riberal agreed. “That makes sense. I love Teddy’s, so it’s no surprise it’s my top choice,” he said.
As for Mahaloha Burgers, both admitted they weren’t familiar with it at first.
“I’ve only had Teddy’s before,” Riberal said, “but I’m glad I got to try these others out.”
Despite their differing preferences, both Riberal and Cervantes agreed that each burger brought something special to the table, whether it was a juicy patty, a perfect bun or the ideal balance of toppings.
So, while they may not have come to a clear conclusion on the best burger, one thing’s for sure: Honolulu’s burger scene is alive and thriving.
If you're wondering why Betty's Burgers were not included in this taste challenge, this is why. We called Betty's 46 times -- from landlines and mobile phones -- to place an order, but no one ever answered the phone. So, we couldn't include them in the challenge. Maybe, next time ....
