(COLORADO SPRINGS) — After a devastating fire in May of 2024 that caused extensive smoke damage to its building, local auto repair and maintenance shop Mikey’s Total Car Care held its grand reopening ceremony on Friday, March 21. During the event, Chavez also announced the winner of a free car giveaway--a woman whose car was recently stolen outside her workplace in Colorado Springs. "The donor of the car wanted to remain anonymous... but we really appreciate the fact that they gifted us this vehicle and we were able to put some money into it and it went to a really good cause," he said. Chavez said they received several nominations from the community for the free car, which made their decision a tough one. "When we went through all the submissions, it was very hard to pick, so we did a random drawing and put [all the submissions] in a nice little drawing thing and I turned my head and drew it, and it happened to be her name," said Chavez. The winner of the car was announced as Teresa Reed, a Special Kids Special Families employee who had her car stolen from the nonprofit's parking lot on March 11. "They did find the car about an hour and a half later, but whoever had stolen it, had totaled it," Reed said. "It has been devastating to me." "A couple of days ago, I got a phone call from Mr. Mike and he told me that my name had been drawn to win a car," she said excitedly. "I feel so blessed." Gifted a 2003 Ford Explorer, Reed said she was overwhelmed with gratitude. "When I first got the call, it was shock and the tears were just flowing and happiness, that I could just get back and forth to work," she added. "And then today, when I got here and saw it, honestly it was the most beautiful vehicle I have ever seen in my life." For Chavez, Reed's story not only touched his heart but his entire staff's, too. "She gives a lot, she works for a nonprofit, she works for an amazing company and this couldn't have come at a better time for her," he explained. Mikey’s Total Car Care officially opened back up on Jan. 2, 2025, and Chavez said business has picked right back up. "We are busy and we are getting busier by the day," he said.
