Police: Security driver arrested for gambling money away, reporting false robbery at Colonial Heights mall

COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- The Colonial Heights Police Department arrested a North Chesterfield man in connection to the false report of a robbery at Southpark Mall on Wednesday evening.
At around 2:35 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, Colonial Heights police responded to Southpark Mall -- located
in the 600 block of Southpark Circle -- regarding a report of a robbery of a Brinks security driver.
After an investigation, it was determined that a robbery did not occur. According to police, the Brinks employee had gambled money away that he then falsely reported had been stolen in a robbery incident. A police spokesperson told 8News that the type of illegal gambling scheme he was involved in is often referred to as a "shell game."
The security employee was identified as 22-year-old Brandon Lasalle Irvin. He was charged with embezzlement, filing a false police report to law enforcement, obstruction of justice and illegal gambling.
Irvin was taken to Riverside Regional Jail, where he is currently being held on a secured bond, according to officials.
