Man accused of crack cocaine distribution in Newport crashed car fleeing police

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — A New Bedford man accused of distributing crack cocaine in Newport attempted to flee police and crashed his car into two other vehicles Thursday, according to Newport police.
Kolby McCoy, 25, is charged with possession with intent to deliver schedule I/II, controlled substa
nce conspiracy, reckless driving and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty.
Also arrested and charged in the incident was Jacques Jeanty, 21, also of New Bedford.
Jeanty is charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver schedule I/II and controlled substance conspiracy.
The arrest stemmed from a Newport Police Vice and Narcotics Unit investigation into crack cocaine distribution in Newport.
McCoy was determined to be the suspect at the conclusion of the investigation.
According to police, detectives learned that McCoy was planning to travel Thursday to the 29 Memorial Boulevard 7-Eleven store to distribute crack cocaine.
After obtaining a search warrant for McCoy’s vehicle, detectives set up a surveillance operation in the store parking lot.
McCoy arrived at approximately 12:45 p.m., two Newport police cruisers pulled in behind his vehicle, and two uniformed officers approached the car.
McCoy attempted to flee and collided with two parked cars in the store lot and his vehicle became stuck on a wood pile.
One of the cars that was struck was occupied, but no one was injured in the collision.
McCoy was taken into custody after attempting to flee on foot.
Jeanty was taken into custody without incident.
Both suspects were held overnight at the Newport Police Station and will be arraigned Friday at Newport District Court.
