Mar 21, 2025
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — This weekend 17 people will embark on a 24-hour mission to support Special Olympics Rhode Island (SORI).
During the Torch Run Super Plunge, the 17 plungers will take a dunk in the chilly waters of Narragansett Bay every hour for an entire day.
"It just inspires yo
u to do more and want to be a part of something that is certainly changing the lives of not just the athletes, but changing lives of their family," SORI President Ed Pacheco told 12 News.

SORI is hoping to set a record this weekend, fundraising $1 million for the organization.
"The fact that they have the opportunity to break $1 million since it's inception speaks volumes to the incredible individuals that are plunging this weekend and the plungers that came before them," Pacheco said.
The 12-year tradition began when current Richmond Police Chief Elwood Johnston took the plunge to spread awareness in honor of his sister.
"It all started because someone thought about the bigger picture and was inspired by the love of their family member, and that's what Special Olympics is all about," Pacheco explained. "Hughes Kennedy Schriver started Special Olympics because of the love of her sister."
The Super Plunge will wrap up on March 23 around noon at Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett. The Annual Torch Run Plunge will kick off right after. About 300 members of law enforcement, fire, justice, sheriffs and the department of corrections are expected to participate.
