INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County prosecutors say a man was convicted for the attempted murder of his girlfriend in February 2023 in what they described as an act of domestic, “intimate partner” violence.
After a two-day trial, prosecutors said Stephen Wieland was found guilty of atte
mpted murder, aggravated battery, domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon, and domestic battery resulting in bodily injury to a pregnant woman.
According to police, the shooting happened February 2023. During the early morning hours, police responded to a home in the 1600 block of Harlan Street on a report of a person shot.
Wieland had told police he came home to find his girlfriend lying in bed with blood on her face, later discovering it to be a gunshot wound.
However, police said after interviewing neighbors, they learned that Wieland and the woman had been arguing before the man’s car pulled out of the driveway.
After interviewing Wieland, police said he admitted to returning to the home after the shooting and continuing to wait another 10-30 minutes before calling for help.
Days later, a forensic interviewer spoke with two of the kids at the home at the time of the shooting; both kids said they heard arguing before seeing blood on the victim, according to police.
After a search warrant, police said they discovered 10mm spent shell casings as well as a bullet fragment with blood and hair on it. Wieland advised that he owned a 1911 handgun which uses 10mm ammunition.
Wieland’s sentencing was scheduled for May 12.
