(WPDE) — The Covington Drive fire remains 80% contained at 2,059 acres on Friday, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission. The minimal amount of rainfall on Thursday had no impact on fire activity, according to the release. The fire is continuing to smolder underground soil whi ch may result in smoky conditions in some neighborhoods. Mastication crews continue their work on Friday along the southern perimeter of the fire. Crews will also continue to actively monitor and patrol firelines while performing mop-up operations when hot spots are recognized. The South Carolina Forestry Commission initiated a red flag fire alert on Thursday, and multiple counties have issued burn bans until further notice.
