Springs Utilities chooses contractor for natural gasfired generators
Mar 21, 2025
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) has selected a contractor to construct and install 400 megawatts (MW) of natural gas-fired generators, near the Colorado Springs Airport.
The 160-acre Horizon Utility Campus will be located near Drennan Road and Foreign Trade
Zone Boulevard. The location already includes a new electric substation that opened in 2024. Now, Springs Utilities has selected PROENERGY Services LLC to construct and install 400 MW of gas-fired generators.
The MW will include 10 individual generating units that feature similar technology to the generators located on the former site of the Martin Drake Power Plant.
“The Horizon Utility Campus will play a premier role in our energy transition,” said Springs Utilities Chief Executive Officer Travas Deal. “These new generating units and other campus projects will go a long way toward providing customers with reliable energy for years to come.”
Within the next few years, other additions to the campus will include:
100 MW of battery energy storage
Two natural gas gate stations
Springs Utilities service center
The generators have an estimated commissioning date of May 2028, with construction scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026.
According to Springs Utilities, the new generators will help current and future energy needs with cleaner, more efficient, and more cost-effective power amid an evolving regulatory landscape. The utility company also said that PROENERGY was selected based on its experience in building similar generation, pre-engineered designs, and turnkey solutions, and first-hand experience with the operational and maintenance needs of plant employees.
The community is invited to come to an informational meeting for surrounding businesses and neighborhoods, which will begin in May. The first meeting will be virtual and is set for May 7 at 6:30 p.m. ...read more read less
