Lancaster teacher charged with assaulting student after boy failed to follow directions

LANCASTER, SC – A teacher faces criminal charges, accused of assaulting a 10-year-old boy at Buford Elementary School in Lancaster.
Michael Edwards is out of jail on bond, charged with assault and battery and cruelty to a child.
The 63-year-old from Charlotte is accused of forcefully pulling the
boy out of an activity in gym class, and then shoving him against the wall.
Other children reported the incident to another teacher at the school on on February 27th.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says the incident was apparently in response to the 10-year-old not following the rules of the activity.
The boy did not have any serious injuries.
The school resource officer is a deputy of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a news release, he and school administrators interviewed several dozen students and another teacher who were in the gym at the time.
Edwards faced a magistrate Friday morning and was released on two $1,000.00 personal recognizance bonds. Both charges he faces are misdemeanors.
The Lancaster County School District has placed Edwards on administrative leave.
