CMPD launches SWITCH program to crack down on shootings into homes
Mar 21, 2025
CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD is now more than one month into a new pilot program aimed at cracking down on shootings into homes.
CMPD said in 2024 there were more than 850 shootings into properties – a three percent increase from 2023.
In those incidents 174 people were hurt.
“Your home
is your safe place. Your family, your loved ones should be able to be in the household and not have to worry about a bullet coming into your house,” CMPD Maj. Michael Anderson said.
CMPD is cracking down on shootings into homes with their new program SWITCH which stands for Safety Wellness Initiative Towards Community Households.
It’s comprised of a team of detectives aimed at putting more resources toward addressing these dangerous and sometimes deadly crimes.
“Our goal is to make sure families feel safe in their homes as well as prevent the next crime,” Anderson said.
It’s a crime that affects communities and people like Joreatha Campbell who previously spoke to WCCB about a drive-by shooting that left her
8 – year-old granddaughter fighting for her life.
“Yesterday she made a whole tiktok video out here in the yard dancing, being a little girl. Now she can’t feel one side of her body,” Campbell said.
Investigators say a majority of these shootings are being committed by juveniles.
This comes after HB 834 went into effect in December – a law that means 16 and 17 year old’s can be charged as adults for felonies.
Investigators are hoping the switch program will help to cut down on some of that crime.
“The gun violence in Charlotte we need to reduce and this is what we’re putting out to bring that reduction,” Anderson said.
CMPD said there will also be a $500 cash reward for information leading to an arrest.
