Lawmakers looking to do away with South Carolina High School League

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- South Carolina lawmakers are looking to do away with the South Carolina High School League and replace it with a new association of 11 officials appointed by state politicians.
The SCHSL, which governs high school sports in the state, would be replaced with a new asso
ciation, the South Carolina High School Athletic Association.
Scott Earley, the executive director of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association, backs the current governing group. He said the lawmakers making this decision "have no idea how to run high school athletics."
Earley said he’s not surprised by the bill but doesn’t agree with the proposed changes, either.
“Change, adjustment, and be adaptive," Earley said. "I mean, there are people who get upset at the high school league, absolutely, but that’s no reason to hand something to somebody who you know, I mean, it would be the equivalent of taking your car to the dentist to have its oil changed.”

Earley said taking away the high school league would be taking away the vote from more than 220 schools in South Carolina, who elected them to be the unbiased, governing body.
“Anytime you’re in a competitive situation where emotions are involved, people talk, constituents talk to the representatives and they're upset at the high school league for various reasons, whether it's, you know, their school got put on probation or, you know, didn’t get in the right region, or the transfer rule," Earley said. "It’s very, very controversial.”
If the bill passes, the new organization, which 24 lawmakers support, would be called the South Carolina High School Athletic Association.
“Some of the people on that bill, I mean, they haven’t even read the bill," Earley said. "It’s kind of one of these things we don’t hope, but pass, but through it, as always create some awareness and a little bit of change, and adapt and compromise.”
If the bill passes, the SCHSL would be eliminated and replaced with an 11-member board and appointed staff. The board members would be appointed by members of the South Carolina House, Senate and other government members.
Current athletic directors, coaches, and other school leaders would be banned from serving.
“It’s better, I guess to be prepared and know that this is something in today’s world that’s trendy and it’s happening all over the country," Earley said. "Some of the states, they have tried to do this. They have actually given the high school league the autonomy or authority back to the league when they see that’s it’s impossible to do unless you’re an expert.”
This bill would only go into effect if it's passed and signed by Gov. Henry McMaster.
News13 has reached out to some legislators about the bill but has not heard back as of this posting.
Meanwhile, the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association on Wednesday approved new transfer rules for high school student athletes. A student athlete who transfers to another school will now have some limitations on how often that athlete can transfer to another school.
