Nicholas Steege has been appointed to be the new General Manager of The Center Club in downtown Baltimore.Steege has been serving as Interim General Manager following the retirement of Kevin Bonner in January. The club’s Assistant General Manager before that, he was recommended for the top positio
n by its Search Committee.Located on the 15th and 16th floors of 100 Light Street, the Center Club was established in 1962 as a private club where business and community leaders from Baltimore and surrounding counties, regardless of race and religion, could come together regularly to address issues of the day and enjoy fine dining. It was formed at a time when other private clubs in the city didn’t accept African-American or Jewish applicants.
In succeeding years, the Center Club was transformed from a luncheon club for top-level executives leading a relatively small number of traditional large corporations to a club whose members are influential women and men from many sectors of industry, as well as non-profit, civic and community leaders from across Maryland. It has a restaurant and an events venue, featuring scenic views of the city. Organizations such as the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore have used it to hold events open to members and non-members.“With nearly 15 years in management positions in the hospitality industry and demonstrated commitment to delivering superlative member experiences at the Center Club, Nicholas is ideally suited to lead this iconic Baltimore club into a new era of growth and vitality,” said Bradley S. Chambers, President of the Board of Governors, in a statement.“Nicholas has been a true partner to the Board of Governors throughout this period of transition, having also played a key role in guiding the significant renovation of the 15th floor kitchen and creation of the Culinary Gallery which debuted last fall,” Chambers continued.“As a management representative to the various committees of the Board, Nicholas is deeply immersed in all of the areas essential to the Center Club’s long-term financial viability. He is relentlessly focused on enhancing member experience and has distinguished himself for his commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, mentorship, and continuous improvement among the Center Club team. We could not be more pleased and confident that the Club is not only in good hands but poised for continued relevance and impact in our city and state.”Before joining the Center Club as Assistant General Manager in 2022, Steege served as the Director of Food and Beverage at the Baltimore Country Club from 2019 to 2022. He held the same position for the Maryland Club and the Bethesda Country Club before that.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Steege earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. He began his career with the Ritz-Carlton hotel group in 2004, where he held leadership roles in front office management, spa operations and club management.“I am deeply honored by the Board’s confidence and thrilled with this opportunity to lead Baltimore’s storied Center Club and to reinforce all that it represents and makes possible for our devoted members and broader community,” Steege said in a statement.“At the heart of any great club is its membership, and I take pride in having cultivated many meaningful relationships at the Center Club, while leading impactful initiatives and fostering a service-driven culture. My leadership philosophy will continue to be prioritizing personalized experiences, continuous improvement and a steadfast commitment to exceeding expectations.” ...read more read less
