Santiago boys golf team defeats King via tiebreaker to win Big VIII League match

CORONA — Same story, different course.
As sunset came upon Glen Ivy Golf Club on Thursday evening, the boys teams from Santiago and King were locked in a match where victory meant early control in the Big VIII League regular-season championship race. After completing nine holes tied at 207 in the
six play-five count format, Santiago for the second straight match found itself prevailing on a tiebreaker.
Santiago (4-2 overall, 3-0 in league) beat Roosevelt by way of tiebreaker Wednesday at Goose Creek Golf Club in Jurupa Valley after those teams shot matching scores of 194.
Freshman Gavin Magowan’s 38 led the way for the Sharks on Thursday.
“Our guys might be a little disappointed but I’m happy with anything under 210, especially considering it was on the back nine we don’t normally use,” Sharks coach Michael Davis said. “Gavin’s come in as the lone freshman and has delivered in a big way for us early on by giving us solid, countable scores on this upperclassmen-laden roster, and I’m excited to see what the rest of the year holds for him along with this team because we’re playing some good golf so far.”
Magowan shined with a wedge in his hand on Thursday, sticking a pair of shots from 60 yards out to less than six feet at No.13 and No. 15 and converting both opportunities for birdies. He made three bogeys in his first five holes to go with them but played his last three holes in 1 over par to get the Sharks off to a good start.
“I didn’t know a lot of these guys when I got to Santiago, but our team has really embraced me and it’s been fun to learn from them,” Magowan said. “Getting through these last two matches with wins is big for us but we know we have to keep working hard because this race isn’t over.”
Santiago’s Gavin Carpenter birdied his first hole, but four double-bogeys in a five-hole stretch as the wind picked up late relegated him to a 44. King’s Harlan Yapa and Chase Slavin combined to make five birdies and three bogeys through six holes Thursday. However, they finished with four bogeys and a double-bogey to both post 38s and tie Magowan for match medalists.
King (4-1 in league) led by six shots with a group in.
However, Santiago’s Cameron Chey hit the flagstick with a greenside bunker shot on No. 18 and tapped in for his fifth par to go along with two bogeys and two double-bogeys to finish off a 42. Along with Rohan Metani’s two-putt par from 20 feet on the 18th for a 40, it was enough to force the match to a tiebreaker.

Golf’s tiebreaker awards the win to whichever team has a lower sixth-player score. Santiago’s Ahvar Sehmi came in with a 45 but had a four-stroke penalty for having too many clubs in his bag and posted a 49. King’s Josh Lance finished with a 51, giving the victory to the Sharks.
