‘This saddens us deeply’: RPS responds to President Trump’s dismantling of the DOE

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond Public School leaders responded to President Donald Trump’s call to dismantle the Department of Education (DOE) on Thursday, March 20.
The president signed an executive order on Thursday to shut down the department, calling it "wasteful." He can't actually shu
t the department down without a vote from Congress to do so.
The Richmond City School Board and Superintendent Jason Kamras said in a joint statement that nothing will change in Richmond Public Schools for now. They added that no teachers will lose their jobs, and critical programs will not end.
The statement said this is because over 90% of education funding and nearly 100% of the decisions about what is taught in Richmond schools come from states and localities, not the federal government.
“This saddens us deeply,” the statement said.
They said the executive order sends a negative message about the nation’s commitment to public education, citing the DOE primarily distributes money for low-income families and students with disabilities, enforces civil rights laws to protect students and staff from discrimination, administers the federal college loan program, and gathers and shares data about public education in the US.
Following the executive order from President Trump, Gov. Glenn Youngkin showed his support, saying the order will effectively end "'all taxpayer support for 'DEI' and institutions that use race and sex as a deciding factor in policies and procedures."
He added that Virginia is ready to take full responsibility of K-12 education. ...read more read less
