BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Lawmakers, lobbyists, and state leaders put politics aside today for the Capitol Classic Basketball Shoot-Out, a long-standing tradition since 1991 that raises money for Special Olympics North Dakota. This year’s event brought in more than $24,000, breaking previous fundra
ising records.
Russell Hanson, who's with Associated General Contractors of North Dakota, said that during the last session, $21,000 was a new record.
The shoot-out featured eight teams made up of state senators, representatives, lobbyists, members of the Capitol Press Corps, and statewide elected officials. In the end, the State Executive Elected Officials took home the Capitol Classic Trophy, defeating the House Democrats in a close final game. Among the winners was Governor Kelly Armstrong.

The Capitol Classic started years ago as a friendly basketball game between legislators and lobbyists. While it has since changed to an arcade-style shoot-out, the purpose remains the same—to bring people together during the legislative session to support Special Olympics athletes.
"We do it for a great cause," Rep. Jonathan Warrey (R/Casselton) said. "We're doing serious legislation throughout the session, but it's fun to take a breather and just have some fun with our colleagues."
Special Olympics North Dakota President and CEO Nancy Hanson praised the event, calling it a great example of teamwork and community support.
