Will the state police step in to protect legal immigrants from ICE?
Mar 20, 2025
BOSTON (WWLP) - In the wake of increased ICE raids, Governor Healey says the Trump administration is not staying true to its word.
After an unrelated event, Governor Healey answered press questions about a Chelsea ICE raid that resulted in the alleged arrest of a legal immigrant on a work Visa.
The governor used this legal immigrant's story as an example of a way the Trump administration is not living up to its promise of creating a safer America.
"That is not what I understood was going to be happening from the Trump administration. I thought the job was to target bad guys. But when they come after working families, working parents here, that is really concerning," said Governor Healey.
The governor was asked about the Massachusetts State Police's role in protecting legal residents of the Bay State, and if they should step in when erroneous arrests are made.
"No, that's not the role of the State Police. The State Police have different roles and responsibilities here in the state. That's the role of the Trump administration," said Healey.
Previously, the governor had promised that the State Police would not assist ICE in their operations, and this latest response rules out the possibility of working against ICE by protecting certain immigrants from detainment.
Despite concerns that legal immigrants will be seized by ICE, the governor encouraged families to continue going to work, school, and doctor appointments as usual.
