RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — CarMax Park is on track for its opening in 2026 and project coordinators were eager to share updates on the progress.
On Thursday, March 20, Mayor Danny Avula was invited to tour the new stadium that will be home to the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Since the ground breaking
ceremony six months ago, construction crews have been working around the clock to bring the project to life.
"We just have stayed on schedule, and right now we're actually maybe even a couple of weeks ahead of where we thought it would be," said Lou DiBella, the team's managing partner. He joined Mayor Avula for a walkthrough of the site.
The new ballpark is expected to be more than just a stadium. The project is slated to serve as a multi-use venue that will also host hundreds of events year-round. Project coordinators say they're just weeks away from completing the steelwork. They plan to celebrate that milestone with a steel topping out ceremony next month.
"It's amazing just to see the steel structure is coming up, to really see the orientation of the park and to start to envision, where the club will be, where the field will be... just thinking about walking into that main entrance and seeing the expanse of center field right before you, it's really exciting to see it come together," Mayor Avula said.
Roofs have also gone up on the dugout suites, where fans will be able to experience the game at field level next to the third base dugout.
Although the team is thrilled about the progress being made, they say it's also a bittersweet feeling as they prepare to bid The Diamond farewell.
"I'm going to miss The Diamond -- that was our home for 15 years," DiBella said. "We did the best we could to make it a great place for everyone to visit."
Starting next month, the team plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Diamond with fireworks shows, theme nights and giveaways. ...read more read less
