National Transport Safety Board recommends Newport Bell Bridge for vessel strike collapse risk review
Mar 20, 2025
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The National Transport Safety Board said that the Clairbone Pell Newport Bridge was identified as one of 68 needing review to assess the danger of collapse after a vessel strike.
The NTSB said that the review came as part of investigations into the collapse of the Francis S
cott Key Bridge in Baltimore in March 2024.
The bridge was classified as “typical,” meaning it did not serve as a “critical link” in the Strategic Highway Network.
“Today’s report does not suggest that the 68 bridges are certain to collapse,” the department said. “The NTSB is recommending that these 30 bridge owners evaluate whether the bridges are above the [American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials] acceptable level of risk.”
