Shelby County's population shows largest decline in U.S.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County, home to Memphis and Tennessee's largest county, experienced the largest population decline among U.S. counties between 2023 and 2024, the U.S. Census Bureau says.
The county's population declined by 3,379 residents between July 1, 2023, and July 1, 2025. It now s
tands at an estimated 910,530 this year — a decline from 930,015 in 2020.
Davidson County, home to Nashville, increased its population from 712,334 to 729,505 during the same period.
The next three counties experiencing the biggest numerical population declines were St. Louis city, Missouri (home to St. Louis), Hinds County, Mississippi (home to Jackson) and Orleans Parish, Louisiana (home to New Orleans).

Many Mississippi counties also suffered some of the biggest population declines, in terms of the percentage of residents leaving the county. Yazoo, Sunflower, Washington, Leflore, and Bolivar counties made up five of the top 10 counties on this list.
The Census Bureau says the U.S. population increased by 1% from 2023 to 2024 to more than 340 million. ...read more read less
