Storms move out as colder air and snow showers move in Thursday

Severe storm threat is ending. Just after 10:00 p.m. the heaviest storms are exiting eastern Indiana and very soon skies will clear overhead as a powerful jet stream roars through the state. A cold front is moving through the state as the Indianapolis International Airport just recorded a 64 mile pe
r hour gust at 10:30 p.m!
Storms reached the Illinois/Indiana state line after 6:00 p.m. and the first tornado warning of the night was issued for Vigo, Clay and Parke Counties. There was a preliminary report of a tornado near the Sky-King airport north of Terre Haute with this storm. This storm would sweep into Hendricks (see funnel clouds picture below from Chris Spangle) and Putnam Counties bringing large hail and damaging winds. Further north a storm that began to spin prompted a second tornado warning For Fountain and WarrenCcounties that tracked into Tippecanoe and Cass Counties.

From shortly before 7 pm through 9:30, heavy, fast-moving storms swept across the state with several tornado warnings issued after 8 pm in southcentral Indiana. A storm moving from near Bedford raced northeast to near Columbus and likely produced extensive damage in Bartholomew County. EMA officials confirm a tornado touchdown with further surveys coming from the National Weather Service.

Damage reports are becoming more widespread after 10:00 pm including damage in Franklin (Johnson County) and portions of Bartholomew County. See pictures below from the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office. Nation-wide severe reports are topping 100 with as many as 9 tornado reports.
Once these storms move out, get ready for another classic case of weather whiplash! A cold front will come sweeping through here. It will give us a shifting wind, another temperature drop and a few flurries for Thursday. High temperatures will be nearly 30° colder than Wednesday running several degrees below average.
