"I was sleeping and I hear a big noise. Boom," said next-door neighbor Jack Huang.
"The shattering of glass is what we heard. It was super loud, It woke me up," said neighbor Rick Bergstrom, who lives across the street
Residents told KHON2 that once they realized there was a fire, they didn't hesitate and ran across the street to pound on the door to wake the residents of the home on fire. They even went to warn the neighbor next door, fearing the the flames would spread.
"So we came out and me and my boy went go up start pounding on the door and everything. Couldn't do nothing," said neighbor Romy Sabalboro. "I heard the window cracking, so then we stood back and then sure enough the window went crack and it all came down."

"It was a massive fire. It was a pretty wild fire. I was surprised at how quickly it went. I mean, it was within ten minutes it went from a small corner of the back house to burning through the front window," said Bergstrom. By the time firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed. Neighbors said the son and daughter of the original homeowners lived in the home. HFD said one person was taken to the hospital, the other died from their injuries.
The next-door neighbor, Jack Huang, was saddened by the tragic news.
"We talked about gardening, my fish, sometimes even my vegetables overgrown to their fence, and they never complained," said Huang.

Just about an hour later, another fire broke out in Kalihi, this one tearing through three abandoned homes at 1128 Banyan Street. No one was inside, but flames came dangerously close to nearby houses and apartments.
"It's the kind of stuff where I can look out my window, I can see you in your window and we can just talk from there," said Jun Butay, who lives next door. "There was a lot of embers coming down and obviously, once it started spreading to the other abandoned house, that's when HFD and HPD told us we gotta book it, we gotta evacuate."
Four units at the Banyan Street Apartment complex were also damaged by the fire.
