SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The birds are chirping, the wildflowers are blooming, the sun sets later in the evening and warmer weather has returned to San Diego -- all signs welcoming the turn of the season.
Thursday, March 20 is when the vernal equinox occurs, marking the official start of spring
in the Northern Hemisphere.
Why do the Carlsbad Flower Fields grow ranunculus, and what are they?
For people itching to get outside and take advantage of the longer days, here are a few ways to kick off the first few weeks of spring in San Diego County.

Visit the Carlsbad Flower Fields
The ranunculus are in bloom at the famous Carlsbad Flower Fields in North County. Visitors can stroll through the colorful fields, go on a tractor wagon ride and interact with butterflies until May 11. Tickets are available on the Carlsbad Flower Fields' website.

Starting April 5, San Diego's historic Belmont Park will transform with stunning floral arrangements and fun photo backdrops as part of its "Belmont in Bloom" event. People can also celebrate spring at the beach with live music, stilt walkers and more experiences fit for all ages. The event is free to the public.

Drink and dine at SeaWorld San Diego
People are invited to treat their tastebuds at the Seven Seas Food Festival at SeaWorld San Diego, available through April 27. Guests young and old can sample different flavors inspired by various cultures around the world while enjoying live entertainment. Tickets are available on SeaWorld San Diego's website.

Attend the Padres' season opener at Petco Park
Join the Friar Faithful at Petco Park for the Padres' first game of the MLB season. The season opener kicks off between the Padres and the Atlanta Braves at 1:10 p.m. on Thursday, March 27.
