FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa. — The calendar says there is still over a week to go in March, but it sure seemed like the Conwell-Egan and Neshaminy softball teams were already in mid-season form in a well-played game between two of the top squads in the area on Wednesday.
In the end it was Conwell-Egan prevailing by the score of 4-3 against a Neshaminy team that had opened its season with a solid victory the day before against defending state champion North Penn.
While it was far from easy as the score indicates, a major facet to the game was the impressive varsity debut of freshman Conwell-Egan pitcher McKenna Seiler.
This girl can flat out throw. She has very good control, an excellent change up and has heat in the mid 60s. The result was 11 strikeouts against a potent Neshaminy lineup for a hard-throwing righty who lives in Yardley and the Pennsbury School District.
“I came here because I really like the school and it has a great reputation in softball,” said Seiler. “It feels great to win my first high school game.”
There are plenty more of those in the works for Seiler and a Conwell-Egan team that starts three freshmen, has only three seniors and possesses a lot of speed throughout its lineup. This allowed the Eagles to pretty much steal second base at will and come back from an early 2-0 deficit.
Neshaminy opened the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI single by Kendall McCafferty, but the damage would have been much worse if Seiler hadn’t roared back to leave the bases loaded with two strikeouts.
Neshaminy also scored in the third when hard-hitting Zahmira Coppola Miller rocketed an RBI single off the glove of an infielder to make the score 2-0. There were other scoring chances as well, but the Redskins were unable to break through again against Seiler until the seventh when Coppola Miller singled and Morgan Leonhauser socked a towering double to center.
By that point Neshaminy had surrendered four runs with starter Adriana Superka surrendering the first three.
Conwell-Egan tied it at 2 in the fourth when bunt singles by Amariah McKnight and Grace Bilado along with an infield single by Lauren Bedard led to sac flies by Jessica Naphy and Aubrey LaScala.
On both of the sacs Conwell-Egan runners dove head first across home plate to beat strong throws by Neshaminy left fielder Addie Pennisi. Jill Rickards also played a strong defensive game and showed lots of range in center fielder.
Conwell-Egan took the lead in the fifth when a walk and stolen base led to an infield error in which a runner was able to race home from second base. What proved to be a very valuable insurance run came in the sixth on an RBI fielders’ choice by Avery Kenworthy against reliever Maysie Thompson.
Considering Neshaminy is clearly one of the better teams on the Conwell-Egan schedule, you can clearly understand why there was a lot of positive vibes in the Conwell-Egan camp following the game. Especially with a freshman pitcher who has such an obvious upside. .
